Intense Pulsed Light Therapy (IPL)
Suffering from dry eye can be more than just mildly annoying. It is often a chronic condition that can result in significant discomfort and cause visual disturbances that interfere with your daily activities.
While in the past, dry eye syndrome was chiefly considered to be a result of not producing enough tears, the leading cause of evaporative dry eye disease is actually a problem known as Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. This condition inhibits the normal secretion of the topmost layer of tear film. At Hudson Valley Eye Associates we provide an advanced treatment called Intense Pulsed Light therapy, which targets the Meibomian Glands and offers the promise of immediate relief and improvement to many individuals suffering with dry eye.
By administering specific calibrated pulses of light to the affected areas, the involved cells and glands are stimulated to once again function more normally. IPL therapy can in some ways be compared to an extremely targeted and effective warm compress. In essence, the treatment liquefies obstructions in the glands that can then be expressed, thereby allowing the oily layer of the tear film to flow freely, as it should.
IPL for dry eye is most effective for patients suffering from moderate to severe dry eye, or Meibomian Gland Dysfunction. Providing immediate improvement and long lasting relief, the procedure may be repeated over a designated period of months for maximum results. It is a painless procedure, with patients able to return to normal activities following their eye care visit.
